Allotment Diary : Winter digging the Vegetable Plot

Veg growing blog @ :
Winter’s coming, the growing season is coming to an end so it’s time to start the task of Winter digging the vegetable beds and adding important manure compost and organic matter.
Firstly I just clear the plot of any old plants then dig out any perennial weeds like nettles docks and thistles.
Then add as much compost and well rotted manure onto the surface as you can lay your hands on.
Then the job of digging.
I just turn the soil over to a spade depth but don’t break the soil up, leaving it in big clods.
The Winter rain and frosts will now do all the work and slowly break down the clumps of soil and by Spring all that I’ll do is to use a hand cultivator to form a fine soil tilth.
